Home improvements the upgrade of choice
20th February 2012
Making new additions to the home is increasingly becoming a favoured alternative to upping sticks and moving out, according to research carried out by home insurer Swinton.
As the housing market continues to falter and prices become less and less affordable, many people are opting to upgrade their current homes rather than break the bank in an attempt to find more modern living quarters.
Most of us like a change from time to time, but that doesn't mean having to move house in pursuit of a brighter bedroom or bigger kitchen. Home improvements can be just as effective in providing a breath of fresh air to your property and lifestyle, without having to go through the hassle of hunting for a suitable alternative.
Finding the right change is important, and there's a wide scope of options available, ranging from new marble flooring to changing up your furniture. You could even embark on slightly bigger projects such as loft conversions, or do something as simple as giving the walls a lick of paint. These are all viable ways through which people are choosing to upgrade their homes.
Steve Chelton, claims manager at Swinton, said: "Many homeowners have been hit by the housing crisis. Those wanting to move simply cannot afford it so are taking steps to improve their home."
Clearly, opting for a variety of new, homely additions presents a cheaper and altogether easier way of constructing a cosier place to live, whilst at the same time increasing its value.
With house prices still seemingly swimming in a deepening pool of uncertainty, home improvements could continue to become an ever more popular option in light of the risks associated with financing a move in the current climate. After all, switching furniture around and changing up the wallpaper will always be easier than getting in the removal men.
